‘At a Death Café, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death’
I’ve taken this excerpt from the deathcafe.com website, feel free to go there for more info.
Most often in everyday life, there is a sense of it being too uncomfortable to chat about death in the way we chat about many other things. At Death Café, you can discuss all things death related with others who are keen to listen and share.
The objective is ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people to make the most if their (finite) lives’
Having worked with dying people for many years, I have witnessed so many conversations, things that people had ‘saved up’ and not spoken about, for fear of being told they were being ‘morbid’ or ‘gloomy’. I personally feel it is such a gift to be able to live with full awareness that our days are numbered, it can really encourage a sense of appreciation, can help with perspective and may even inspire us to make life-changing decisions.
Death Cafés are a place for a group discussion around all matters relating to death and dying. There is no agenda. It is not a grief support or counselling session and is probably not best suited to those who are recently bereaved.
Venue
I hold these Death Cafés in Tigermoth Roastery in Lewes, which kindly lets us use their space after hours. I firmly support the origins of the movement, which were rooted in tea and goodies! I will provide herbal tea and sweet treats. Feel free to bring your own. Donations are gladly accepted to cover the costs.
Please get in touch to chat more, or reserve a space.
Numbers are limited to allow for a group size such that we can all chat together.
